Udupi, Nov 14: To raise awareness about diabetes, department of Endocrinology and Kasturba Hospital Manipal, has organized series of diabetes screening and awareness camps. The Free Diabetes Screening camp was conducted from 6.30 am to 11.00 am on Wednesday, November 14 at various locations. The programme benefited around 2,500 people of Udupi district and 342 patients were diagnosed with diabetes through this initiation. The screening camp was organized at 8 different locations
This programme was jointly inaugurated by Dr Pragna Rao, dean KMC Manipal, C G Muthana, COO of Kasturba Hospital Manipal, Ln Tallur Shivaram Shetty, district Lion governor, Manjunath Shettigar, counsellor of Eeshwar Nagar and Dr Sahana Shetty, HOD department of Endocrinology.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Sahana Shetty said, “One in every two people with diabetes remain undiagnosed. Four-in-five adults across the globe failed to correctly identify the warning signs of diabetes in an IDF study. This is a major concern, due to the signs being milder in type 2 diabetes. Left untreated or unmanaged, diabetes can lead to life-threating complications. Diabetes is the major cause for heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and foot amputations. Early diagnosis and treatment if the key to prevent or delay the complications. Eighty percent of type 2 diabetes is preventable by adopting a healthy life style.”
“The theme for World Diabetes Day 2018 is ‘the family and diabetes, diabetes concerns every family’. The primary aim is to raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family and to promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of the condition,” she added
The camp was held on following locations: Manipal @ Taxi stand, behind City bus stand, Udupi @ Board High School, Opp Service bus stand, Brahmavar @ near bus stand in front of Taxi stand, Kundapur @ near Taluk office, Shastri Circle & also at Dr T M A Pai Hospital Udupi and Karkala and Udupi Railway Station.
