Mangaluru, Nov 14: A lady from Kodagu, who was a student of St Agnes College in the city in the past, has made her alma mater proud by successfully climbing Elbrus, the highest mountain peak of Russia. The woman who achieved this feat happens to be Bhavani, daughter of Tekkada Nanjunda and Parvathi couple from Peroor in Napoklu, Kodagu.

Bhavani had completed her primary and secondary school education at Srimangala and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Galibeedu. She chose to pursue degree course in St Agnes College hear. Currently, after completing education, she has been functioning as a teacher in Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling.

Bhavani represented India as member of a team of mountaineers which included one member each from Mexico, France, and Romania. The four mountaineers of the team were provided with a three-day training in Russia. This mountain happens to be the tenth highest peak from among European nations. Bhavani successfully reached the top of the snow-clad Elbrus mountain in about eight hours time. She also got credit as the fastest lady from India to scale this mountain. She also was the first among the four in her team to reach the top. Her success has become sweeter for the reason that she reached the mountain peak ahead of the other three, all of whom were male.

Bhavani began the climb at midnight on October 18 and reached the top at 9.30 am on October 19. Bhavani, who has immense interest in mountaineering, also wants to climb Mt Everest some day.
