Mangaluru, Nov 11: Under the limits of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), Self Assessment Scheme (SAS) of property tax is in action since the financial year of 2008-09. Accordingly, owners and lessees of the properties have to decide for themselves and pay the requisite tax within 90 days of the beginning of each new year.
Information was relayed to all the property taxpayers to pay the tax of last year with the prescribed fine if the same has not been paid. The temporary numbers of the taxpayers who have not paid double tax will be cancelled and legal action will be taken on them. So the taxpayers who have not paid their property tax have to do so. This information is given by the commissioner of MCC in a publication.
According to the rules if the tax is not paid within the stipulated period, then the same needs to be paid with a fine of 2% per month. Every year around 60% of taxpayers are paying the property tax within the prescribed time limit. Others are paying in the following year with a fine. However, when the records of the current year were verified many taxpayers have not paid the property tax from three to four years.
It has also come to light that taxpayers of unauthorized buildings, who have to pay twice the amount of tax, are paying the double tax only in the first year and are paying only nominal tax in the following years. In addition, some owners of properties are showing less area of the property and paying less tax than what needs to be paid to MCC.
All the above cases are in violation of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act and the MCC will take suitable action, says the publication from the commissioner of MCC.
