Udupi, Oct 21: Police Martyrs’ Day was observed at Chandu Maidan here on Sunday, October 21 to commemorate the sacrifices of police personnel who lost their lives on duty.
Venkatesh Nayak, district and sessions court judge, Udupi speaking on the occasion said, “This day is being celebrated in all police units as a mark of respect to brave police martyrs, who sacrificed their life on duty. It is the ongoing sacrifice of thousands of our men and women that we continue to enjoy an atmosphere of peace, security and prosperity in the state. Today, once again we respect and remember, and salute our real heroes of Karnataka police.
“I identify the police force not as armed power, but as disciplined official sector, ready to sacrifice their day and night to keep people secure and also to get social justice for public,” he said.
Quoting the words of Justice Iyer, he said, ‘Every constable and higher officer up to the rank of DAG must undergo a necessary course of legal training. This involves special training on detection and intelligence. We want efficiency in every directions and dimensions in the police cadre.”
“Police personnel must work as per law. Independent police investigation is as important as independence of the jurisdiction. Sacrifices of police are unforgettable,” the judge added.
Lakshan Nimbargi, superintendent of police Udupi district, said that Martyrs’ Day marks the attack of Chinese forces on a police team patrolling the Indo-China border on October 21, 1959. “It is our duty to remember their selfless service. Most of the time we talk about anti-social and anti-national elements, but this is the time for wiping the tears from the victims’ families and building confidence and courage among them.”
Parade commander Raghavendra, RPI, District Armed Reserve Police, led the team.
The chief guests of the programme and others offered flower tribute.
