Udupi, Oct 19: Hours before the idol of goddess Sharada was immersed in water, the wall of a pond at Jaya Durgaparameshwari temple collapsed in Kannarpady, Udupi on Thursday, October 18.
The incident has given rise to speculations among the devotees that goddess Durga has shown her anger for installing the idol of goddess Sharada in the same village.
Locals say that they worshiped goddess Durga at the temple for many years and for the first time, the idol of goddess Sharada was installed and worshiped this year in the same village.
The devotees alleged that some had gone against an age-old tradition by installing the idol of Sharada. They also said that those who installed the idol of Sharada had not sought permission from muzrai department under which Devi temple comes.
The wall of the temple pond collapsed at around 8.15pm, an hour before the idol of Sharada was immersed in water with devotees claiming 'Devi's wrath'.
Hundreds of devotees took part in 'Anna Santharpana' at the temple on the occasion of Navaratri.
