Mangaluru: Police seize 55 private 'No Parking' boards, warn building owners

Mangaluru, Oct 18: As many as 55 boards were seized and notices were issued to the building owners by city traffic police on Wednesday, October 18, as they initiated a drive against ‘No parking boards’ placed in front of commercial complexes and apartments in the city.

People in the city have been experiencing problems related to vehicle parking as building owners put up ‘no parking’ boards in front of shops, commercial complexes and apartments. Acting on repeated complaints in the weekly phone-in programme, and following instructions from the police commissioner, the boards were removed by the police.

DCP (Crime and Traffic) Uma Prashanth, police personnel led by ACP Manjunath Shetty carried out the drive at Hampankatte, Clock Tower, Navabharath Circle, Bejai, Falnir and at Mallikatte. All the boards were seized by the police.

DCP Uma Prashanth said that notices were served to all building owners who placed the boards. “They were asked not to place the boards and warned of strict action in case if they replace the boards,” she said.

    Shortage of multi storey car parking in commercial area. Politicians travel to foreign countries but never bring any ideas about how to solve the parking problems. Even we require parking for 2 wheelers and 3 wheelers. How about making sky rides in the city for 2 wheelers and 3 wheelers with good Amount of parking for 2/3 wheelers (Autos). How about making one way road from PVS to Kodialbail Church atleast at peak hours . This will reduce traffic at city-point . Change most of the perpendicular road side parking to diagnol parking . This will reduce most of the parking accidents. Prepare for smart city!

    NOBODY HAS RIGHT TO KEEP NO PARKING BOARD ACCORDING TO LAW.HOWEVER WE MAY SEE EVERYWHERE SUCH BOARDS.IT IS NOT ONLY IN MANGALORE CITY.EVEN IN RURAL AREA ALSO.SOME SHOP/BUILDING OWNERS FIXES INTERLOCK TILL ROAD AND KEEP NOPARKING BOARD.TALUK MAGISTRATE,POLIC E DEPARTMENT,LOCAL BODY SUCH AS FROM PANCHAYATH TO MUNICIPAL CORPORATION HAS POWER TO TAKE ACTION ABOUT THIS.NOW CAME AWARENESS ABOUT THIS ISSUE.NOW IT IS SHOULD NOT STOP.ACT IS TO BE DONE EVERYWHERE.

    Off course a good move by our police department
    which was long due but this should be done
    on a everyday basis or on a continuous basis
    But again this should not not be done on a selective
    Basis but on a broad based on each and every
    Street or Roads.
    There are more than 10 to 20 no parking boards in
    Each streets or roads if Mangaluru and
    If our police department sincerely and seriously
    Do this removal campaign or action
    They may find at least 500 such boards in one day
    But still these actions to be complimented
    And to be appreciated.

    Great job by the Traffic Police. I hope this is not a one off exercise and that the boards will return after a week. Shop owners in commercial buildings used to behave as if they owned the public property in front of their shops. Now I hope they will learn a lesson.
    Access or gates to a private property or residence cannot be blocked by anyone by parking their vehicles and hindering the movement of the residents. Residents can initiate action against offenders through the Police if someone indulges in such nonsense.

    Govt. offices/Banks/Commercial and residential builders/building owners must not be granted permits to do business unless they provide under ground or any other mode of parking facilities.

    The private property is within the compound or the plot area. The foothpath the road Donot belongbto owners of buildings. The owner of a particular building can rwquest others not to park their vehicles infront of their house. Though parking at entrance of house and gate is blocking the owners right to enter and exit the building. Good move by the police dept.

    How do 'Beware of Dogs' boards harm the public ? Instead, it helps. And in addition it informs thieves that there is a dog so beware if you are conspiring a barge-in. Even if somebody puts a board and there is no dog inside, it still is of advantage to the owner. Secondly, trespassers will wait at the gate to be invited than walking-in as if they own the place.

    Apart from this, the police advises residents to keep a dog so that thieves will be at bay. This habit immensely helps when just an old couple stays in a house.

    Better late than never, am glad that the police realized now that these were unauthorized "No Parking" boards. Unnecessarily placing these boards and creating and increasing the parking woes..hence good initiative...Well done !!

    What a great job by the police lifting only the No Parking boards, why do not you lift (tow) vehicles which are parked on footpaths, front of the gates, on the roads and etc. The excuse is that the vehicles get damaged. How come in a city like Bangalore, Bombay vehicles are towed so easily. Funniest thing in Mangalore is that our footpath and road are of the same level if there is a footpath. Vehicles are parked on footpaths very easily. So big Hotels were there is Valet parking the staff park the vehicles on the footpath.

    The space in front of commercial complex is a setback area given mcc... they have no right to atop publuc to park their cars there systematically.
    If they think it is their private parking space, then let the ckmplex people put a boundry wall there... they wil not dare to do so

    Absolutely Great Job by Police Personnel. This used to be a major issue while people just put boards as per their whims n fancies. "No Parking " in front of shops, used to create a lot of inconvenience to vehicle owners. This is a welcome move and appreciate Police action regarding this.
    Hope people co-operate and continue to be more disciplined.

    this is not a solution. first create a public parking spots either paid or unpaid. it is common interest for the shop owners customer they reserve the parking for their customers. what you do if there is no reserved parking for the shop or restaurant you are planning to go? obviously you will not go and these business people never get business after spending so much for the rent etc.

    therefore, DCP needs to see the impact of the action. first find a solution and take an action. many building hardly have space and if the public parks their vehicles in front of these shops where customers should park. in addition to this people working in the neighbor building are parking in front of the shops or resident buildings. in order to avoid these issues, these private "no parking" boards have been installed in front of their premises. i dont think it is illegal unless, the building owner or any govt authority provide parking spots for the customers of the shops or visitors to the residents.

    another issue from the builders. they just promote their flat without proper parking. also there is no in and out roads to the building. so pathetic. in one entry residence to get in and out.

    The public road is public property. If every body talk like you and put up NO PARKING BOARD in front of their shops IN PUBLIC PROPERTY, where the public will park their vehicles? Do you want the public to park their vehicle in your compound? Good and fine. Tell me where is your compound? I do not mind parking MY VEHICLE IN YOUR COMPOUND.IT WILL BE VERY SAFE. No Problem.

    You do not dictate your terms to the public and let the POLICE DEPARTMENT do their job. Jai Hind.

    Very good move by the concerned authorities. I have experienced this many times in and around Mangalore city and also fought with the people who place this kind of 'No Parking' boards. It is the property of the municipality and everyone has the right to park in front of any shop or mall if space available no matter whether they have any work or not in the concerned building. If at all it is to be objected, then there should be compound wall for the building and 'IN' & 'OUT' markings to be put to the building gate. With the rise of vehicles in the city it is really difficult to find parking space if one wants to move around with a vehicle may it be 2 or 4 wheeler. Thanks for the stern action by the police department. Hope this action will be kept in force.

    Just wondering how are commercial complexes being given licences when they cannot provide ample parking for customers.

    Is parking fees being charged in city centre mall a scam or being done legally? Curious as the forum and Bharat and some other smaller malls don't seem to charge any. A little off topic but still....

    In the same breath, Police need to let us know how to handle situations where people mindlessly park their vehicles in front of gates and disappear for hours altogether. Recently I had to take my mother in law to the hospital, but was delayed because someone had parked his car right in front of the gate!

    This is a complex problem. Many commercial complexes have converted their parking space into shops. Further most of the places along roadside have been redesignated by Auto, Tempo, Taxi drivers as their parking spaces. Can MCC/ MCTP wake up and do a good job of allocating dedicated parking spaces for the general public?

    If anyone parks in front of a gate it amounts to obstructive parking u/s 122 of Motor Vehicle Act . Send photographs of the vehicle along with the number to the traffic acp - email available on Mangalore city police website.Do it routinely and follow-up your complaint.
