Mangaluru, Oct 17: The city corporation has planned to replace the old market building currently standing at Kadri, as it is 40 years old and in dilapidated condition. To be able to do so, it has to first accommodate the people currently occupying the building in make-shift accommodations till the new building is ready.
Currently the corporation has begun the work of building temporary sheds into which the shopkeepers in the market building can move for now. This building is coming up in the vacant spot opposite the market building. The current old building is home to 45 different stalls and these stalls face problems on account of the building being old and devoid of basic facilities.

Former MLA J R Lobo had noted that the present market at Kadri does not have basic facilities for shopkeepers, customers and the general public. So he had mooted the idea of building a new market complex after discussing the same with the MCC authorities. So an estimate of Rs 14.71 crore was done for the new market complex that will come up at a space of 70 cents including the present 25 cents and 45 cents that is adjacent to the present market site. This estimate was subsequently sent to the chief engineer, communication and building, Public Works Department (south), Bengaluru for technical verification. This estimate and plan have been approved by the PWD department also.
“The work of constructing temporary market complex at Kadri to accommodate the vendors has begun. Once the work of temporary market complex is over, the shopkeepers in the present old market will be shifted to the temporary facility and the construction work of the new, well-equipped, market complex will begin," said Linge Gowda, MCC engineer, giving details of the project.
