Udupi, Nov 7: A gang of strangers entered Jayalakshmi Textiles in Udyavar near here and threatened the shop owners by firing in the air on the night of Tuesday November 4. A case has been registered in Kaup police station in this respect, on the night of Wednesday November 5.
Reportedly, Veerendra Hegde, owner of Jayalakshmi Textiles, had received a telephone call, attributed to underworld don Bannanje Raja on October 19. The caller demanded a sum of Rs 50 lac from Hegde.
At about 8.30 pm on Tuesday, when Veerendra Hegde and his brother Ravindra Hegde were inside the said shop, they heard some sound which they thought to be the bursting of fire crackers. However, when they came out, they saw two strangers fleeing in a motor bike after firing in the air.
Ravindra Hegde received a call again, at about 11 am on Wednesday. The caller said that what transpired the earlier night was just a sample of the things to come. The caller, who spoke in Tulu, also allegedly threatened of showing off what he is capable of, if the store owner failed to pay up the money as demanded earlier.
No one was hurt in the incident. Businessmen of various places are apprehensive because of the development.
The district superintendent of police Pravin Pawar has confirmed the firing incident. The owners initially, had not filed any official complaint. Investigations are on.
