Udupi, Oct 2: St Mary’s College Shirva is organising state level 46th senior (men) and 30th senior (women) weightlifting competitions 2018 in association with St Mary’s College Alumni Association from October 1 to 3.
The whole college has a festive look in organising state and university inter-collegiate weightlifting and ‘Best Physique’ competitions.
The event was inaugurated by Baptist Lobo, deputy general manager of Vijaya Bank, Hubballi region. “Hard work and commitment are the basics in the formation of sports person in spite of the pains and difficulties. No excuse will make a good sports person, but he has to practice and perform.” Being weightlifter himself he shared his experiences during the occasion.
The chief guest Dr Kishor Kumar CK, vice-chancellor in-charge, commended the college for organising the event in a systematic way. He also said, “Mangalore University is the one which formulated the sports policy and sports persons excelling in the various events at intervarsity, state and national level are given financial incentives. Seats are reserved in all the programmes of the colleges to promote sports.” Seeing record number of participants to the inter-collegiate and state events, he wished great achievements and performers will emerge in such competitions held in rural areas.
Weight lifting competitions are held for ‘Professor A Richard Rebello rolling shield’ for men and ‘Shirva Blossom Mansion Celistine D’Souza’ rolling shied for women.
D Chandrahasa Rai, secretary of Karnataka State Weightlifters Association, appreciated St Mary’s College for organising state event in a rural place like Shirva.
Fr Denis Alexander D’Sa, correspondent of St Mary’s and Don Bosco institutions Shirva in his presidential remarks said, “Now time has come to identify and support rural talents in sports. We have sports persons in every nook and corner of the country taking part in all events. The task before us is encouraging them to reach national and international level and I wish a comfortable and memorable stay on the campus.”
During the programme, Commonwealth silver medallist Gururaj was felicitated for his achievement for bringing laurels to the nation.
Fr Mahesh, Norbert Machado, Melwin Aranha, professor Bhasker Shetty, professor Sudhakara Marla, CA Krishnaraj, Safthar Ali, Precilla, Juliet, state level jury members, state level office bearers, former weight lifters of the university and the state, physical education directors from various colleges, large number of sports persons from affiliated colleges, sports persons of SAI, Bengaluru, Alvas Moodbidri, SDM Sports Club, Mangaluru, Udupi, Davanagere and Bhadravathi are participating in the contest.
K Vishwanath K, president of St Mary’s College Alumni Association, welcomed the guests, retired professor Ronald J Moras, alumni chief advisor introduced the guests, professor Rajan VN, principal St Mary’s college made opening remarks on the events organised, Venugopalakrishna Nonda, physical education director of the college thanked each and every one for their co-operation and support in organising the programme.
