Udupi, Nov 2: The Udupi police have arrested a person who allegedly duped girls by posing as a prospective groom through newspaper advertisements and recovered gold ornaments from him.
B R Siddalinga Prasad alias Mohan Kumar from Tumkur had advertised in newspapers, saying that he was in search of a bride in government service. He succeeded in convincing a gullible girl from the city, that he would marry her. He also convinced her to part with her gold ornaments worth about a lac of rupees. Later, he neither married her, nor returned the ornaments. A case was registered with the local town police station against him by the duped girl.
Acting under the guidance of deputy superintendent of police Vishwanat Pandit and inspector Ganesh Hegde, sub inspector Maruti G Nayak took the man into custody from near Udupi bus stand on October 18. The police recovered two nokia mobile sets, ornaments worth about Rs 51,000 and cash amounting to Rs 5,475 from him. After producing him in the local court, the policemen secured his police custody. He was then taken to Bangalore from where gold ornaments worth around a lac of rupees that he had sold to a jewellery shop, was confiscated. After producing him again in the court, the court of the chief judicial magistrate here, has remanded him to judicial custody.
