Udupi, Jul 31: It was a day filled with fun and enjoyment to the people of all ages gathered at a slush field near Baikady church road here on July 29 to participate in ‘Yeya Ghandyanth Khelya’ rural sports day organized by St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Youth Association.
The programme was inaugurated by Fr Joseph Chaco, assistant vicar, St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar, and Samson D'Souza, secretary, St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar by unveiling the trophies.
In his inaugural message Fr Joseph Chaco, congratulated the youth association for organizing such a unique event and appreciated all the youths who had come to participate in the event.
Evita D'Souza, vice-president, St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Youth Association, welcomed the gathering and Gregwin Barnes rendered the vote of thanks.
A traditional rural food was served for lunch. Hundreds of locals participated in various competitions, drenching themselves in muddy water and thoroughly enjoying the day.
As part of the rural sports, various games like tug of war, running, relay, volley ball, throw ball and many others games were organized for people.
The valedictory programme was presided by Fr Eldho M Paul, vicar general, Saint Mary's Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar along with Fr Joseph Chaco and Samson D'Souza.
Fr Eldho M. Paul in his message said, “I congratulate the youths of St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar. You all have come and been together the whole day and this is the best example for unity. This is the first time our youths have organized this event and probably next year, this event will be organized in better way.”
Holy Family Church, Brahmavar, emerged to be overall champions, St Thomas Syrian Church, Sastan were first runners-up and Sacred Heart Church, Kolagiri, and St Antony Church, Kuntalnagar were second runners-up. The winners were given cash prize and trophies.
Sponsors of the event were honored on the occasion.
Evita D'Souza, vice-president, St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Youth Association, and Ravi Prakash Gonsalves, vice president, Holy Family Church, Brahmavar were present for the event.
