Udupi, Jul 27: Kargil Vijay Diwas was observed by Sanchalan at DC office campus, Rajathasri Manipal here on Thursday, July 26 in association with district administration, Udupi, and Dr G Shankar Government First Grade College, Udupi to pay homage the martyrs of Kargil war.
President of ex-servicemen's association Udupi, Gilbert Braganza speaking on the occasion said, “There is sacrifice behind every victory. Parents sacrifice many things for their children. Likewise, many lives have been lost safeguarding the Indian Territory. Eighteen years ago, the Indian army conducted 90 days of surgical strike successfully, to retrieve high-altitude outposts occupied by Pakistani intruders. Many families lost their beloved sons and brothers. As many as 527 Indian armed forces personnel laid down their lives during the 90-day long war and hundreds of soldiers suffered injuries. If any person, does not paid tribute to those martyrs, he is not an Indian citizen.
“Coastal district people respect army persons. Once a soldier, always remains a soldier. Do not miss the chance to get into the Indian Armed Forces,” he said.
President of Sanchalana, Prem Prasad Shetty said, "Sanchalana has been organising this programme for the last 4 years in different parts of Karnataka to highlight the sacrifices and valour of our martyrs.
“The planting of 527 tree saplings in their memory will make people remember the martyrs for a long time and also contribute for environment protection,” he said.
NSS students and guests planted saplings in the campus of DC office.
Deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis, ZP CEO of Udupi Shivananda Kapashi, assistant director of Youth Empowerment & Sports, Udupi district Dr Roshan Shetty and hundreds of students and youths participated in the programme.
