Bengaluru, Jul 7: A farmer from the district, who was eagerly waiting to get relief from the loan waiver scheme proposed to be announced by the government, hanged himself after coming to know that the loan waiver scheme announced in the budget would not apply to him. The deceased farmer happened to be Chikkaswamy (45) from Demahalli in the taluk.
Chikkaswamy had availed loans from agricultural credit cooperative bank and Grameen Bank During February this year. All these days, he had rested his hopes on the government's announcement of loan waiver scheme which he felt would cover loans availed till May 31 this year. When the announcement came, he was dismayed as the waiver scheme covered loans raised till December 31, 2017 only.
After Chikkaswamy ended his life on Friday July 6, farmers placed the body of the deceased farmer on the road and protested. Even after officials approached them and tried to convince them against going ahead with the protest, the farmers said the protest would continue till suitable compensation was offered. After minister, N Mahesh, promised in the evening to provide compensation of five lac rupees to the farmer's family, the protesters relented.
Another farmer, Sanganna Sanganabasappa Kapanoor (54) from Alur village, Muddebihal taluk in Vijayapura district had committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday.
Pandappa Ramappa Ambi (52) from Chikkapadasalagi village in Jamakhandi taluk, Bagalkot district, had hanged himself on account of mounting debt on Thursday.
