Udupi: Inspired by ‘Wall of Kindness’ students paint walls to help needy

Udupi, Jul 5: A group of 10 students from SDM Ayurvedic College, taking initiative as part of their summer internship, cleaned and painted walls near Sri Krishna math here recently.

The activity was held taking a cue from Wall of Kindness project India, a charity work phenomenon and a kind of welfare, usually done by attaching cloth hangers from outside of houses; those encourage people to donate miscellaneous useful things such as winter clothing, stationary items like books, notebooks, sandals and other things.

The team of ten members painted the wall of toilet, located on the premises of Sri Krishna math to draw the attention of passers-by and tourists. The students, pursuing UG, took 4-5 days and painted the walls. A positive response from the locals, tourists, and devotees of Sri Krishna math has been witnessed.

Speaking to Daijiworld, one among the students, Suresh said, “This will help the poor. People, instead of dumping old used items, can keep it here. It will help the poor and needy or those who are not afford to buy some things. Good Samaritans and our teachers have extended their support.

“Migrants and tourists used to spit at this place. We cleaned the wall first and coated it with paint. We have installed hangers, book racks and stands near the walls. We did the first few arrangements from our own pockets. We hope that people will not spit anymore seeing the paintings on the wall and reading the messages written over them,” he said.

About summer internship

Under summer internship, students will have to adopt one or more villages and conduct activities of their choice including shramdaan, creation of sanitation infrastructure, system building, behavior change campaigns and other IEC initiatives in and around nearby villages to contribute to the cause of rural sanitation in India. The internship will be of at least 100 hours in the period of May 1 to July 31, 2018.

The selected interns are required to submit an internship report in the prescribed format to the supervisor within 15 days of completion of fieldwork. At the conclusion of the internship, the best interns would be identified at college, university, state and national levels.

Every intern who completes the internship program gets a certificate of the internship by the Swachh Bharat Mission. The guidelines for the internship are being formulated in consultation with the Department of Higher Education.

The University Grants Commission has agreed to provide 2 credit points as an ‘elective’ under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to students in Higher Educational Institutions who would be undertaking and completing the SBSI.
