Beltangady, Jun 28: A youth, showing exemplary presence of mind, saved a boy who had fallen into a drain that was in full flow and was being washed away. The incident was reported from Bovumajalu in Kuppetty in Tannirpantha village, Beltangady taluk, on Wednesday June 27 evening.
The boy who was saved from the jaws of death has been identified as Afnan (10), a fifth standard student of Jnanabharathi School, Uppinangady. He happens to be the son of Saleem from Bovumajalu.
The youth who saved Afnan is Muhammed Afraq, son of B Usman, from Kuppetty. It is said that Afraq, who is an electrician by profession, had taken the role of driver in a vehicle belonging to his elder brother in which school children are transported, on Wednesday.
After school children alighted from the vehicle, they were walking through the Bovumajalu bridge when Afnan accidentally slipped and fell into the drain below. Other children raised an alarm at this unfortunate happening. Arfaq, who heard the shout, rushed to the spot, jumped into the drain, and saved the boy who was getting washed away.
Because of heavy rain experienced in the region then, the drain was in full flow, and the boy had been dragged away for about 100 feet due to the force of water before he could be rescued. Afraq, who brought to the boy to safety, also provided first aid to him.
Arfaq has received wholehearted appreciation from all and sundry for showing courage and presence of mind in saving the boy, who was facing a grave peril.
