Haveri, Jun 24: In an incident in which a man dropped his pregnant wife down the bridge into the river with the purpose of killing her, has beenreported from Rattihalli taluk in the district. However, the woman miraculously survived.
The woman who was dropped down into the river was Aruna Kumari, wife of Roopesh Gowda from Chikkakabbar village in Rattihalli taluk of the district. Roopesh had pushed his wife down the bridge at Nandigudi in the village into River Tungabhadra that is in full flow, at about 11.30 pm on Thursday June 21, before fleeing. The woman, who fell into the flowing river, got washed away for about half a km before she could hold on to a rock in the middle of the river. She spent the entire night on this rock. In the morning, people who heard her wails, reached the rock in a raft and saved her.
It is said that Roopesh Gowda was pestering his wife to abort her pregnancy but she was not agreeable. Angered by her stubborn resistance, he had taken her out in car in the guise of having dinner in a hotel. He stopped his car at the bridge across Tungabhadra river at Nandigudi, forcibly got her to alight from the car, and threw her down the bridge, it is said.
The police who have registered a case, are investigating.
