Mangaluru, Apr 19: Forest minister, district in-charge minister and senior Congress leader Bellipadi Ramanath Rai filed nomination paper on Thursday, April 19, for the 8th time for the upcoming assembly polls.
Rai proceeded towards Mini Soudha in B C Road through padayathra along with his supporters and filed his nomination paper.
Ramanath Rai is the only leader who has won 7 elections from the same party and the constituency. He has also served under three chief ministers.
He was elected as MLA in 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2008 and 2013. In 1992 he served as the state home minister, excise minister in 1994, fisheries minister in 1999, transport minister in 2002 and forest minister in 2013.
Bantwal which is a high-profile constituency, Rai is contesting for 7th time after being elected as the MLA for six times.
Born in an agricultural family, he has involved himself in public service for the last 50 years. Known as 'Babiyanna', Rai has lost only one election against B Nagaraj Shetty in 2004.
The BJP on the other hand has fielded Rajesh Naik who lost against Rai last time. Shetty is backed by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.
Meanwhile senior Congress leader Abhay Chandra Jain too filed his nomination paper with Moodabidri election officer.
