Mangaluru, Apr 18: IPS officer Vipul Kumar took charge as the police commissioner of Mangaluru city on the evening of Wednesday April 18.
He took over the charge from outgoing police commissioner T R Suresh in a simple ceremony.
The tranfered had been ordered by the state government on the directions of the Election Commission in view of the upcoming Karnataka Assembly polls.
Speaking after assuming office, the police commissioner said that this was his first posting in Mangaluru.
"I will work towards maintaining peace and harmony in the city," he said.
Before being transferred to Mangaluru, Vipul Kumar, an officer of the 1999 batch, had served as inspector general of police (IGP) and director of Karnataka Police Academy, Mysuru.
A native of Jehanabad in Bihar, Vipul Kumar holds an MTech degree. He knows several languages including Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Punjabi and Urdu.
