Mangaluru: Candlelight vigil on April 16 against rape culture, citizens urged to join

Mangaluru, Apr 15: A candlelight vigil will be organised at DC's office here on Monday April 16 at 6.30 pm, condemning the incidents of rape and other crimes against women, particularly the Kathua and Unnao cases.

Social activists, students, professionals and other concerned citizens will be part of the vigil.

A meeting on Saturday April 14 to discuss the protest. It was decided that those participating in the the vigil will not target any political party or individual nor resort to sloganeering.

Mother of Sowjanya, who was raped and murdered in Beltangady in 2012, will also join the protest.

The organizers stressed that the protest will be against rape culture and against rapists and not any one or two incidents.

Giving details, social activist Vidya Dinker said, "People like us who love each other and uphold humanity should raise our voice against such brutalities that happened in Kathua. We should come together and condemn the incident. By doing this, we should give a signal to the culprits that we will not sit mum on the heinous crime.

"The Kathua victim is our daughter. She was raped and killed by inhuman mentalities. To escape from punishment they got help from those in power. Tomorrow they may come to our areas and kill our daughters too. So we need to wake up and protest. I appeal to all who love humanity to join the candlelight vigil," she said.

    The lights from the tiny life has already being forcefully exhausted. It is time for India to come together in mass to rekindle the fire against these rapists.
    There are more than 36,000 rapes in India last year alone. Some even don't come forward fearing the social boycott.
    Though there are many rape cases in this nation of lawlessness, it is extremely alarming that these rapes had taken political and religious angle.
    What more disgusting is the ruling party members of BJP open defence in public for rapist. Even most worst is the Prime Minister Modi who just interested in his political speech for assembly elections.
    Nirbhaya and Aasifa fate are similar. Both have gone through the ordeal only mother who had delivered her beautiful daughters and seen grown in front of them can imagine.
    It is time for every mother of India to understand the seriousness of 'Beti Bachao' which can be considered as warning rather than slogan.

    While protests against any kind of rapes is welcome i expected similar reaction when a girl in our own Karnataka in Bijapur was gangraped and murdered. Similarly the other day a 12 year old girl was raped by 15 year old in Chickmagalur in Chickmagalur in Karnataka. But no one thought it fit even to raise eyebrows even though the incident occured in our own state. our conscience did not permit us to make any kind of protest. Or should our reactions depend on who rules which state and whom affects or benefits most politically.
    There are people who respond only when they want mileage and here too I can say the same. Why not a candle vigil against all the rape victims and better we start against those which happened nearer home.

To add to this, just candle lit vigil is not enough to awake the concerned authorities. We need to hold demonstrations during working hours against all those in power, without politicizing the issue, until the guilty are punished.

    Well this vigil is much needed along with this i really hope there will be changes in law to chop off those who are culprit in any rape and murder case, who ever it is, which ever religion he belongs or sex the punishment should be same harsh and in public. Chop their heads or Hang them in public. Unless we do not see this implementation, we will see many rapes and murders there is no doubts in it. I really feel bad sometimes when my fellow colleagues who is from western nationals question me whats happening in your country, why all this rape and murders, i say its every where but i still have that thing in my heart we have people in our own country who do not even raise this questions they just sit and watch. Its shame we being in Democratic country do not raise questions when we know that its wrong. Forget religion and political parties, keep a side and think we are humans first before all.     I see a lot of people commenting that they have woken now and have not woken for others. The fact is that 106 women are raped every hour in 2016 in India according to national survey. People protest aginst it every time but what happens is there is no result from it and things are not getting better because these protests don't seem to reach the people actually doing this. Downtrodding of people in society causes crimes like this. Are we a society that is able to find the root of this problem other than making laws and making people scared that they are going to die because they rape or are we a society that is able to find why this happens on an individual level and try to rather make people feel it is morally and humanitarianly wrong? Awareness needs to be brought and it doesn't mean when. I see comments that support rapists and comments here that talk about the dress the girl wears. No comments about why such an act is committed. The mindset of the individual the reason and his justifications and if he has any regret needs to be taken as the reasons because it isn't just lust. It is an example of dysfunction in our society. We come together as a country on so many days to celebrate but refrain from this because we don't feel it's a use and that if it doesn't happen to us it isn't related. If that is so then the freedom of our country is by no means related to you and you are never free from your polluted mindset.
