Bangalore: JDS Loses Two More Wickets - Katti, Gowrishanker Join BJP

Bangalore, Aug 19: Its now seven "down" for the opposition with two more JD(S) legislators - former minister Umesh Katti and first time MLA D C Gowrishankar - quitting their parent party and joining the BJP on Monday.

Their resignations come on the eve of the BJP state executive meeting to be held on Tuesday in Bangalore where consolidation of the party strength in the Legislative Assembly is prime on the agenda for discussion.

It was first Katti who put in his papers, followed by Gowrishankar, son of former minister C Chennigappa, in the evening.  Both of them submitted their resignation from Assembly membership  - Katti from Hukkeri constituency in Belgaum and Gowrishankar from Madhugiri in Tumkur - to Speaker Jagadish Shettar and then drove to the BJP party office in Malleswaram to be welcomed to the party fold by state president D V Sadananda Gowda.

Katti said he was quitting the JD(S) as he was disgusted with the internal affairs of the party. Asked if he was a ministerial aspirant, Katti said “I joined the BJP inspired by the programmes of Yeddyurappa. I have been a minister in the J H Patel cabinet and seen it all. But if the party wishes to give me ministerial responsibility I will accept it or discharge my duties as party worker” He also said the JD (S) had become the family party of Deve Gowda. In protest against the feudal attitude of Gowda, he has quit the party, Katti said. Gowrishankar said the only motive behind his decision was to take up developmental work in his constituency being in the ruling party. According to sources, Gowrishankar will soon be made Chairman of either BDA or KSRTC.

Interestingly, Gowrishankar, a few weeks ago had told Deccan Herald, that he will not quit the JD (S) as his constituency people may not like it. He had claimed that he was getting all the support from the government to carry on development work in his constituency. But on Monday evening after stepping into the BJP office, he said, “my leaders are Yeddyurappa and Reddy. It is impossible to improve my constituency if I am in the Opposition”.

His father Chennigappa, former minister and one-time close confidant of H D Deve Gowda,  is also hobnobbing with the BJP but he has not announced when he would join the BJP.

The number of party hoppers to join the BJP has now increased to seven - four from the JD (S) and three from the Congress. Meanwhile, the BJP is said to have approached two more opposition legislators - V Somanna and Baburao Chinansur (all Congress) to join the saffron fold.

Deve Gowda reacts

JD (S) National President H D Deve Gowda refused to react to the development. He said, “I have nothing to say and you know why I am saying this”.

JD (S) should be eliminated from Karnataka as the state has suffered a huge loss due to illiterate Gowda & his sons. Also majority of the people even minorities losing faith in congress for their anti india policies & policies on terrorism.

Democracy at its worst!!! We already forgot that it was us who spent loads of money (out own money) o elect these third grade politicians who have least respect for democracy and the for the people who elected them.

By resigning their membership, they are forcing one more by-election costing us money to re-elect them. We dream of being a super-power within next 12 years. With these kind of leaders, can we do that???

It is very sad. Itis a mockery of democracy.BJP has time and again proved that it will stay in power either by crook or hook.It has hooked a few worms, and the worms will destroy the party with a difference.Honesty and integrity are becoming extinct in politics.

It is very sad for the democracy. These MLAs, who are defecting from one party to another should be punished! BJP should not think that they are the winners. There are more than 70 MLAs in BJP who have worked for the party for a long time, but they have not got any good positions in the Govt. I predict a big split in BJP within two years.

Currenty the Bellary mining mafia is the back bone of BJP in the state. Once the Mining industry is nationalised, the bad days of BJP will start. However, they may be getting a temporaty victory at the present circumstances. Let us wait and see. Jai Hind.

BJP should not be happy. They also will be in the same shoes one day, just like Pervaiz Musharaf. There is a saying 'One day for you and one day for me'. And these MLAs who are jumping from one tree to another should be considered as 'Honeyhawkers' because they will jump whenever and wherever they find better honey somewhere alse. No voters should trust them.

Before congress did it now it is the BJP turn. Now Janatadal begged to Congress, so we cannot think or justify them, what we should pray to god is only let our state improve. Now there is no difference between the Political party and the Indian cricket team.

Ironic to know that being in opposition it is impossible to develop his constituency. That constituency does not belong to Karnataka state? Ruling party is governing only that area, from where their candidates are elected? How can we term this as legal act, when an elected member cheats thousands of people and wastes millions of Rupees from tax payer’s money for by-election? Police arrest the cheats under IPC 420 apparently this also must come under the same code. Expenses for the by-election must come from those who resign and join other party and must not be allowed to contest from the same constituency. Tax payer’s money is for the development of the country/state and not for the by election of these cheats.

Its disturbing to see MLA's behave like "political prostitutes" and change their party for the sake of power. These oppurtunists do not deserve to be a part of Indian democracy as they are curse to the society. Any true politician / leader will stand his ground and serve his people irrespective of the position that he is in. It amazes me when i see a so called "secular leader??" adopt saffron idealogy overnight? regarding BJP.....they are desperate to cling on to POWER and hence with the blessings of their "mining" lords are busy ruining democracy and BUYING MLA's. Mr. Yeddy remember... what goes around, comes around!!!!!
