Mangaluru, Mar 8: Bhaskar Moily has been elected as the Mayor of city on Thursday, March 8.
Earlier, he was chosen by Congress corporators to contest the mayoral election from the party.
In an election that took place at Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) office, Bhaskar Moily secured 37 votes and Surendra from BJP secured 19 votes and 5 corporators remained neutral.

A Congress corporators’ meeting was held on Thursday, March 8 morning and Bhaskar Moily’s name was unanimously endorsed by the party. District in-charge minister Ramanath Rai chaired the meeting. MLAs J R Lobo, Moideen Bawa, MLC Ivan D’Souza and present mayor Kavitha Sanil took part in the meeting, as per sources who informed Daijiworld.
Mohammed Kunjathabail from Congress was elected as deputy mayor. He secured 37 votes while Meera Karkera from BJP secured 19 votes. Five corporators remained neutral.
As many as 59 corporators, Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo and MLC Ivan D'Souza were present and voted in the election.
ADC Kumar and MCC commissioner Nazeer were present.
Shivayogi Kalasada was the election officer.
Mayor Bhaskar Moily said, “MCC has received several awards from the state government. All the 60 corporators worked hard for MCC which led to a lot of development in the city that brought us awards. I urge support from people, officials, and corporators so that we can work as a team,”
Deputy Mayor K Mohammed said, "I thank ministers Ramanath Rai and U T Khader, and MLAs J R Lobo and Moideen Bava for their support throughout. Any issues in development works brought to our notice will be resolved. We have a challenge posed in Smart City project and the funds will be utilized well to make Mangaluru a Smart City.”
Several BJP corporators including Sudhir Shetty, Ganesh Hosabettu and others congratulated new mayor Bhaskar Moily and urged to quicken the pace of development works under Smart City and Premium FIR project during his tenure. They also requested him to take everyone into confidence and work in unity for the overall development of Mangaluru.
