Beltangady, Jan 31: A suspected chain snatcher attacked a policeman from Dharmasthala station at Charmadi ghat on Tuesday January 30. The attacker succeeded in fleeing after hitting the policeman.
The police personnel on patrol duty had got information that two thieves who had stolen a chain from within the limits of Banakal police station in Chikkamagaluru district were speeding through Charmadi ghat road. The policemen began to wait for the arrival of the two-wheeler carrying the thieves. Two policemen from Dharmasthala station along with two home guards were at Charmadi check post then.
The staff began to check vehicles moving by the check post, when a Bajaj motor bike came that way at 4 pm with two people on it. The police signalled the vehicle to stop, but the rider kept driving the two wheeler further. One of the policemen on duty, Javed Patel, then chased the vehicle and tried to catch hold of one of the riders. But both the people on the bike then rained blows on Javed's stomach, hands and legs. By then, the other personnel at the check post reached the spot.
Before others came in support of the constable, one of the accused succeeded in fleeing. The other person, who is said to be from Hasan district, was caught. Injured Javed was treated as inpatient in a private hospital at Ujire. A case stands registered in Charmasthala police station relating to this incident.
