Mangaluru: Two-day Sahyadri 'Aerophilia' national event attracts aero enthusiasts

Mangaluru, Jan 28: Aeronatics enthusiasts made a beeline to Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management here on Friday January 26 and Saturday January 27 to witness 'Aerophilia 2018', a two-day national-level aero-modelling competition and air show.

In an initiative to widen the innovative prospects in the field of aeronautics, Sahyadri College invited students of all grades and colleges across the country to the two-day 'Aerophilia'. Scores of students presented their models during the course of the event. The competition provided a platform to the students to showcase their talents and pursue their passion in a field that is very unique and provide eclectic opportunities.

Apart from aero modelling there were various other events like drone race, water rocket, chuck glider, rubik’s cube, paper plane, treasure hunt, PC Games and photography. Students from all over India from prestigious colleges took part in the competition.

The event was organized by Team Challengers of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, a group of students passionate about aeronautics and robotics. Experienced students who have participated in SAE International Aero Design Competition 2016 and 2017 held at Fort Worth, Texas, and Florida in USA, Boeing Aero Modeling Competition and various other aero modeling competitions formed the organizing committee.


Day 1

The inguaral function on first day started at 11:15 am with group captains Col Mahendra Babu and M J Augustine as chief guests. Vice-principal S S Balakrishnam, Vishal Rao from Kinetic Hobbies, Sahyadri Group chairman Manjunath Bhandari and trustee Devadas Shetty were present.

The guests shared their experience and knowledge regarding their profession and also their experience in Aerophilia.

The main event was aero design which drove many aviation enthusiasts to the field. There was a helishow by international flyers Abdullah Gaseem and Eesa Saeed, accompanied by Farah Al-Sauri. It was open to the public and all students on January 26. The air show provided a multitude of learning experiences in mathematics, history, arts/graphics and science.

Apart from aero modelling, other events like paper plane, PC games and treasure hunt were conducted.


Day 2

The second day was even more energetic. The second round of aero modelling started at 7:30 am for those qualified from the first round. Technical session were conducted by Capt M J Augustine from 9 am to 10 am and by Col Mahendra Babu from 10 to 11 am. Drone race started at around 11:30 am. Along with these, sub events like treasure Hunt, paper plane, photography, PC games and water rocket were also conducted.

The valedictory function began at 3 pm with Col Mahendra Babu, Vishal Rao from Kinetic Hobies, chairman Manjunath Bhandari and personality developer Nevill as guests. Winners of the various events were announced.

The Aerophilia 2018 winners were honoured with cash prizes worth of Rs 2,75, 000.
