Mangaluru, Jan 27: The Johnlyn Toy Exchange & Book Bank promoted by veteran journalist and writer John B Monteiro was launched in a glittering function at Johnlyn Cottage, Bondel here on Saturday, January 27.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest of the event, Dr Ravichandran, founder, CEO of Diya Systems said, "I have known John closely from 10 years. He still has the same passion and enthusiasm which he had a decade ago. Mangaluru is lucky to have him. At the age of 80, he is an inspiration and role model for many. With a commitment to serve the underprivileged, he has succeeded in putting a smile on the faces of the underprivileged children.”
Presenting his own example of how he and his family has been helping and donating for a noble cause at the Little Sisters of the Poor, Dr Ravichandran encouraged the gathering to contribute to John’s efforts and said, “John is asking us to donate what we do not want. This is an easy task for all of us. Let us support all him and make this venture successful,” he said.
Guest of honour, Vathika Pai, president of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry said, “I have known John from two years. His noble effort to serve the underprivileged show that he is an amazing human being. Things like toys and books to read make children’s life memorable. The quote ‘Helping hands are better than praying lips’ suit John aptly.”
Walter Nandalike, founder and managing director of Daijiworld praised John’s new concept and said, “The Johnlyn Toy Exchange & Book Bank will help thousands of poor and needy children. It is heartening to see John dedicate this concept to his late wife. Writing for Daijworld for more than a decade, his work has always been appreciated. I wish him all the luck and encourage everyone to support this noble venture.”
Fr Vinod Lobo, assistant parish priest, St Lawrence Church, Bondel blessed and inaugurated the refurbished outhouse which will house the office for toy exchange and book bank. Calling John ‘Moses of Modern Era’, Fr Vinod appreciated John for his work and also Dr Ravichandran for his help to the poor and needy.
A few bags of toys were donated to the children after drawing lots. The toys were handed over to the children of Bondel Boys’ Home, Chinnara Thangudana and Infant Jesus Orphanage.
John B Monteiro’s son Mohan welcomed the guests and the gathering and daughter Preema rendered the vote of thanks.
