KSRTC Airavat bus accident near Hassan - culprit is foggy weather

Daijiworld Media Network - Hassan (SP)

Hassan, Jan 14: The macabre accident involving a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation's (KSRTC) Volvo Airavat bus that occurred in the early hours of Saturday January 13 appears to have been caused because of foggy weather which had affected the view of the driver.

The accident happened after the driver of the bus, which had left Bengaluru for Dharmasthala at 11.45 pm, lost control over his vehicle at 3.30 am on Saturday due to thick fog. The bus fell into a roadside ditch after smashing the protective metal barricade of the bridge on the left side of national highway 75 close to agricultural college near Karekere in the district.

Rakesh Prabhu, Bijo George, Sonia & Diana

Bijo George (27), Diana (20) and Sonia (27) from Gundibagilu in Beltangady taluk. Rakesh Prabhu (26) from Kanyadi, Dharmasthala, Gangadhar (55) from Bengaluru, bus driver, Shivappa Chalavadi (42) and conductor, Laxman (45), lost their lives in this accident. The body of another female passenger is yet to be identified. Injured persons were shifted to NDRK private hospital at Hassan, medical college hospital in the city, and hospitals at Bengaluru and Mangaluru depending upon the type and gravity of injuries.

The bus had 44 passengers and the road condition was good at the accident spot. Therefore, the police presume that foggy conditions would have blurred the driver's vision, causing the accident. The driver, who had put in nine years of service in KSRTC, had an impeccable record with no accidents in his career so far. It is said that the bus was moving at 59 km per hour speed at the time of the accident and it was in good condition with its fitness certificate valid till April this year. The driver had been newly posted on this route.

As the bus plunged into the ditch head-on, its front portion was completely mangled. The bus was lifted out of the ditch with the help of multiple cranes. Many of the deceased were doctors, software engineers, medical professionals, etc. Several of them were bound for hometown on account of three-day weekend.

The accident would have claimed more lives but for the efforts put in by a passenger, Kishore, who came out by reaching the driver's seat, climbed to the road and shouted for help. Several people moving by the road extended a helping hand in rescue operation. Ambulances from the city too rushed to the spot thereafter.

District superintendent of police, Rahul Kumar Shapuravad, visited the spot along with senior officials. The officials also visited hospitals.

State transport minister, H M Rvanna, has announced compensation of three lac rupees to the families of the deceased. He said that treatment expenses of the injured would be borne by the government.

Very heart breaking news. Rakesh Prabhu was a good friend of mine, He was a very silent and soft spoken person. Cannot believe the fact he is no more. May god give a lot of strength to his family to overcome this great loss.
    Rest in Peace brother.
Also RIP to all the people who lost lives in this tragic accident and god give their families strength to overcome their loss.
KSRTC should atleast compensate 25 Lakh to each of the families who lost their dear ones.
Also KSRTC should take serious measures to completely avoid such Accidents in future.
Instead of pressurizing the drivers to reach destination on time they should at-least give them the freedom to take a short break or a short nap in case the driver feels dizzy or exhausted. In order to avoid a disaster and cry later.

In KSRTC Airavata, there are 2 bus drivers & they both switch between them as drivers & conductors. In earlier times, the bus drivers, especially the one on Mumbai route used to be well built as they used to drive Ashok Leylands & they used to eat & drink nicely for free with a little bit of 60 whenever they used to stop. The bill used for this free food used to be borne by the passengers. Once I had been to Mumbai with one of the drivers & we got nice pomfret fry, chicken sukka etc., whereas the passengers used to complain about the food. Now it's not the case anymore. I have seen that some of the multi-axle buses are so lean that I wonder how they take the stress of driving for such a long distance. I understand that Volvo buses are just like the latest cars to drive unlike the old Ashok Leylands, but still the food & drink they used to have in earlier days used to make some difference for them to drive comfortably.

Dead cannot speak. However it is unlikely to be foggy weather but most likely to be driver dozing off on the wheel.
It's easy to blame on the weather that absolves ksrtc with all the culpability of this tragedy.
Even if for argument sake the visibility is less , then it's the drivers responsibility in driving according to the weather conditions.

Best way out as a deterance to avoid rash driving as well as to hold the bus company liable, A STRONG CASE DEMANDING HEFTY FINE HAS TO BE FILED AGAINST KSRTC. IF KSTRC looses more than a crore in fines it will surely put a huge restraint on other private operators.
Successful outcome of this case will prove that India still values human lives and that there is little value for human lives in India will be proven wrong.

    RIP

    No seat belts for passengers.

These are dacota buses charging luxury with no basic seat belt.

There transport rules only to grab money, not actually for safety.

Why no seat belt, let government pay 25 lakh compensation each.

Sudden entry of local villagers into NH75 might also be the cause. This is common in this area. Driver alone cannot be blamed.

These buses are not safe to travel...
Maximum people should be capped at 40..
And seat belts should be there... Otherwise person collide with other objects and injuries will be more...
    Very scary picture.. RIP

KSRTC is to be blamed for posting a driver new to the route during Night trip. Authorities who assigned new route to the driver should be punished as many lives lost & far more injuries to other passengers.
Indian roads are notorious, only experienced driver should be assigned during night trips.
KSRTC should pay higher compensation, 3 Lakh is a joke, shame.
After all there is no value for human beings in this country.

If foggy weather was the culprit, all the vehicles passed through that road should have met the same fate. The culprit is the driver.
