Dubai, Jul 23: In a move that could relieve the pain of commuters who are struggling due to a lack of a viable transport options, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has finally legalised car pooling in Dubai.
Drivers can now legally transport passengers provided that they submit full details of their employer and the names of any passengers to the RTA. A web site, sharekni.ae, has been launched specifically for this purpose.
This is the first initiative of its kind in the region and the RTA hopes to bring down traffic congestion and encourage people to use the car-sharing service which has long been banned to prevent illegal taxi services.
“The service is beneficial for the passengers as well as the drivers. Motorists can now transport passengers while passengers can easily find a driver providing the service through the site.
People can now freely move from one place to another without fearing they will be caught by RTA inspectors,” said Abdul Aziz Malik, CEO of Dubai Taxi Agency. Each car owner is allowed to carpool a maximum of four passengers at any one time.
