Bengaluru, Jan 2: State unit of BJP has condemned the statement of state primary and secondary education minister, Tanveer Sait, opposing the bill that proposes to ban divorce through triple talaq. It has also sought clarification on the minister's stand from the chief minister.
"Congress should, in addition, make clear its stand on this issue at the national level. It also has to say whether it will extend support for the smooth passage of the bill in the Rajya Sabha like it did in Lok Sabha," BJP has urged.
Speaking to media persons at the BJP office at Malleshwaram here on Monday January 1, spokesperson of the party and MLA, S Suresh Kumar, noted that the central government had moved the bill in Lok Sabha against triple talaq as per the diktats of the Supreme Court. In the initial stages, Congress wanted the matter to be referred to parliamentary standing committee. But later, it changed its stance, and cooperated in passing the bill in Lok Sabha. But minister, Tanveer Sait, has said that ban placed on triple talaq cannot be accepted and that the bill will not be supported. Kumar felt that the defiant stand owned by the minister is not fit to be condoned.
Suresh Kumar wanted the chief minister to explain about the statement made by one of his cabinet ministers on the issue.
He also pointed out that the chief minister, who has often claimed himself to be a socialist, has developed the 'costly' habit of having food in silver plate. He wanted to know whether Siddaramaiah was right in having such a habit. "People in public life who claim themselves to be socialists, are expected to behave like one. But Siddaramaiah eats from silver plate. He also was wearing wrist watch costing several lacs of rupees. After the wrist watch became subject matter of controversy, he said he had handed it over to the government. He spent Rs 40 lac for food alone at Kalaburagi. What kind of socialism is this?" he wondered aloud.
