Mangaluru, Dec 28: The city is bracing up to get back one of the prominent landmarks, Clock Tower, it had lost a few years ago. Blue print of the new clock tower, which will come up exactly where it once stood, has been prepared, and it will be a part of the works under Smart City project.
It is gathered that construction of clock tower has been included under the Smart City project at the insistence of city mayor, Kavitha Sanil. Clock Tower construction was not part of the Smart City project envisaged earlier. As the mayor insisted on it, it was included later. As per the estimate, clock tower construction, including the main building, yard work, alluminium ladders, clocks and electrical installations, will cost Rs 90 lac. The mayor wants this project to be executed on priority and accordingly, blue print is ready and the work is in the stage of calling for tenders.
Old Clock tower (L) and proposed one
The tower will come up adjacent to the place where the the old one once stood, attached to the park next to it. The tower will be surrounded by green landscape, with a small flower garden around it and four giant clocks will be fitted atop the tower. The mayor wants to bring back the glory of the Clock Tower which once signified the identity of the city.
Kavitha Sanil said that it has been her dream to build a new Clock Tower at the spot where the old one once stood. She said that like the old one, the new tower will be 21 metres high.
About two decades ago, the Clock Tower was demolished for widening of the road. Even after the tower disappeared, the place is still known with the name, 'Clock Tower'.
