Bengaluru: Sunny Leone's tweet on New Year party sparks huge debate

Bengaluru, Dec 20 (DHNS): Bollywood star Sunny Leone's tweet, announcing her inability to attend the New Year's event in Bengaluru on safety grounds triggered a massive outpouring of support from twitterati. They wondered aloud how a 'progressive' government surrendered to the threats of fringe elements and failed to guarantee her safety.

Here's how Leone rationalised her decision to opt out of the celebrations: "Since the police of Bangalore have publicly said that they will not be able to ensure mine & all who attend safety for my New Years event, my team & I feel, safety of the people should always come first therefore I cannot attend. God bless & I wish everyone a safe & happy New Year!"

The tweet had earned 3,700 likes and 666 retweets by Tuesday evening, sparking a huge debate on law and order, safety and the government's position.

Standup comedian Kunal Kamra responded through a tweet to the Congress, questioning their double standards. "Shameful that you guys criticize law and order in UP but can't even manage an event in Bangalore, Chodo yeh double standards & get your act together on this one."

Writer and blogger Sandip Ghose tweeted that he was proud of Leone's stand. "More power to you. Surprised that a government under the progressive #CongressPresidentRahulGandhi not able to provide security. Stay strong. The youth and the young at heart are with you," he said.

But he was disappointed that the liberal citizens of the city had not issued a statement and organised a march on Brigade Road in support of the actor.

Another Twitter user wondered how the city police could back out from providing security to a performance. "This is the failure of the system in which we live today..moral policing by a bunch of goons.. and shocking that a police machinery of a state cannot ensure security," tweeted another user, Suresh.

A few dubbed the threat to Leone as part of right wing extremism. "If you cannot provide security for such a small event then how would people of Karnataka feel safe?" wondered one user. However, another user, Capt Mohit Kohli termed Leone's decision as a wise move.

"Moreover, an artist should not perform in such an unartistic environment, hampers your spirit. Come to Delhi instead...Please!" he urged her.

In Gaurav Tiwari's views, Karnataka Rajyotsava or New Year's eve can both happen simultaneously. "It must be left for the crowd to decide what they want to attend," he said.

This is too much. When locals are not comfortable sunny perform in their city, then please don't force them.Bengaluru is and was always accepting people from different parts of India. But it doesn't mean that something should be forced on their local's throat.

If she is so adamant to perform then let her do it in Delhi,Mumbai or Goa.Why not in her hometown Punjab. Will they allow her to do.She comes from place where women are given third degree torture. Can't she focus on such issues rather than stooping down.People watch her performing and after they finish enjoying to cool their eyes ,when they are on streets and see a girl they rape. This is how rape culture that's why after rapists caught and listen their confrontation, you would think itbwouod have avoided. Watching porns not all have control onntheir body, some go to such level that even they rape children n animals.

Such things should be banned because govt donot provide protection to every girl, kids or animals in India. Its an impossible tasks.

What is so great about her performing on New Year's event ? The organizers think only in terms of money (cash flow). She has already performed in the past. Those who want to watch can explore other means which are available in Internet.

At least siddu have the guts to stop this porn star from spoiling Karnataka youths... She is just coming to publicize her porn films and hence cashing out big money from the poor youths.
What message she will pass to youth ? What credibility or morality she have to be a role model for our young generation... she should be kept out of focus to respect the women and values of this country !

A Porn-Star need the security on Tax-Payers money? For whom you are performing? Are you going to donate whole amount collected from that event to the Police Welfare Fund for the security if they provide you? NEVER!!!!! you will pick up every penny and run away boarding the first available flight from the city!!!! Still if you want to perform "HIRE THE SECURITY" and pay a part of the COLLECTION!!!!! You are not doing any "SAMAAJ SEVA"

Please get some of your facts right before you go on with your rants about Sunny Leone.

Firstly, the state police in India does not offer security to private events free of costs. Whether it is IPL or some film shooting or new year celebrations, they do charge a fee based on their assessment of the manpower requirement.

Secondly, hiring a private security is not a viable alternative for Sunny Leone’s event. When thousands of strangers from different parts of the city come to an event, where many of them would be drunk, you will need a policeman to control the crowd if something goes wrong. Private security guards would neither have any such experience nor have the legal authority to exert force.

Thirdly, you may agree or disagree with Sunny’s past choices, but the fact is that she has a higher threat perception from the drunk thugs of Bangalore than you and I. Hence she needs to have an assurance from the city’s police system that her security will be guaranteed.

Fourthly, Sunny Leone performing for new year in Bangalore is no different from Maliaka Arora or Bipasha Basu performing in other parts of the country. Sunny has a right to engage in a legal economic activity, just like everybody else. Do you think it is too much for a woman to ask for an assurance of security from the city police, just because her past does not fit in with your ego? By your logic, a prisoner condemned to death has no right to life in India??

If nothing else, at least have some regard to the hours and hours of naughty videos of Sunny you would have streamed all these years while lying on your bed alone!! Long live Sunny Leone.
