Puttur, Dec 19: In connection with an incident in which a person was robbed at Netravati riverbank at Uppinangady in the taluk sometime back, the police have succeeded in arresting one of the accused. He was arrested from near Nelyady by Uppinandady police on Monday December 18. The police are now looking for the other partner in this crime.
The arrested accused has been identified as Muhammed Altaf (22), son of Abdurrazack from Nellipalike, Ajilamogaru. A cellphone has been confiscated from his possession. The other accused who was involved with the first one, has absconded and search for him is on.
It is said that the duo had dragged away a person named Ganesh Poojary from Biliyur to Netravati riverbank at Kempimajal, Gandhi Park in Uppinangady on December 5. Poojary was attacked inhumanly by the two there. Another person, Hamza from Gandhi Park, who had come there to take bath in the river, saw this incident and tried to protect the youth being beaten up. The duo then turned their ire at Hamza and attacked him. They robbed Rs 7,000 in cash and a cellphone from Hamza before fleeing, it is reported.
On the basis of complaint given by Hamza, a case was registered in Uppinangady police station.
The police say that arrested Muhammed Altaf and the other accused who is at large currently, are drug addicts and notorious criminals. They rarely went home and normally roamed around and mostly lived in and around Nehru Maidan, Mangaluru. In addition to committing thefts and robberies, they moved around parks and desolate areas whee they used to threaten either lovers or people moving around alone, and robbed money and ornaments from them. Police sources said that many affected persons did not register complaints as the two mostly targetted lovers, who were afraid that if they complain their personal lives would become common knowledge.
Altaf faces two cases of robbery in Pandeshwar Mangaluru station and a theft case in Bantwal rural station.The arrest was made by Uppinangady police sub-inspector, Nandakumar, under the guidance of Puttur rural police circle inspector, Gopal Naik. The arrested accused was produced in court.
