Kasargod: Lure of windfall costs teacher her job, money, peace of mind

Kasargod, Dec 18: A teacher working at Paduppu within Bedagam police station limits has filed a case at Bedagam station, alleging that she was fleeced of Rs 12.47 lac by a person who acted like a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) official. It is gathered that the teacher believed the words of the fake person that she would be able to gain access to three crore rupees.

The lady teacher said in her complaint that a person who had opened a Facebook account with the fake name, John Black, had introduced himself to be an RBI employee. He obtained the bank account number of the teacher and said that a sum of three crore rupees was waiting to be deposited into her account on account of wrong account number. He said that she would be entitled to withdraw this sum after paying taxes on the same.

Trusting his word, the teacher used her entire savings and borrowed from different teachers and remitted Rs 12.47 lac in total in three installments. When she got a fresh demand for Rs 25 lac, she grew suspicious and complained to the police. The police, in their preliminary investigation, found that the money remitted by her was withdrawn through fake accounts maintained in New Delhi and Mijoram.

As soon as the other teachers came to know that the teacher was taken for a ride by a fraudster, they started pressurizing her to repay the money lent by them. The school administration, finding that their staff was involved with a fraudulent transaction, removed her from employment.
