Udupi, Dec 18: President of Hebri Taluk Action Committee, H Bhaskar Jois, and convener, Neere Krishna Shetty, have expressed the opinion that the government was not right in rejecting Hebri's claim to the status of the taluk. Hebri had been left out from a recent order about formation of new taluks because of the fact that it does not meet crietria of minimum population and minimum number of villages under its jurisdiction.
"The taluk formation committee headed by M B Prakash had clearly stated in its report that in this district, Hebri was the only town to be fully eligible to become a new taluk. There is no justification, in spite of this report, in dropping Hebri and issuing notification about creation of all other taluks as recommended. It was improper to have included gram panchayats located just six km away from Hebri under other taluks," they stated.
The committee also expressed resentment at the way the concerned seem to believe that presence of national highway and seashore are mandatory requirements for new taluks in this district. "Still, we repose our faith on the former chief minister and hope that a notification about the creation of new taluk would be issued soon. We hope that the government will have open mind and issue notification about creation of Hebri without delay," they stated.
