Mangaluru, Dec 17: The sixth district and sessions court here has concluded that the charge of dowry death levelled against an accused has been proved. While pronouncing him guilty, it has reserved its orders on the quantum of sentence and will announce the same on Monday December 18.
The court said that Devikumar alias Sunil (38) from Kanyana Kanichcharu in Bantwal taluk is guilty of the above crime. Sunil was facing the charge of being responsible for the death of his wife, Savitha (27) within eight months of marrying her.
Sunil had married Savitha from Hirebail in Kalasa, Moodigere taluk, on January 3, 2013 at Kalasa in Chikkamagaluru district. The couple was staying at their family home at Kanichcharu after marriage.
Reportedly, Sunil used to come home heavily drunk everyday and inflict mental and physical torture to his wife. In addition to pressurizing his wife to bring more dowry, he also reportedly threatened her of murder. On the night of February 20, 2014, he tied a rope around his wife's neck and killed her, it was alleged. A case of dowry harassment and murder had been filed in Vittal police station. The then deputy superintendent of police in Bantwal, Rashmi Paraddi, had investigated the case and filed charge sheet in the court.
