Udupi: Badagubettu Credit Co-operative Society to celebrate centenary year on Dec 14

Udupi, Dec 12: "Badagubettu Credit Co-operative Society, here is set to celebrate its centenary year on Thursday December 14," said chief manager Jayaprakash Shetty at a press meet at Diana Hotel in the city on Monday December 11. The programme will be held at Ammanni Ramanna Shetty auditorium here.

"The centenary celebration will be inaugurated by Ramesh Jarakiholi, Karnataka state co-operation minister. Pramod Madhwaraj, district-in-charge minister of Udupi will preside over the programme.

"Sri Vidyavallabha Theertha, Kaniyoor Math will give his blessings. Fr Valerian Mendonsa, chancellor, Udupi diocese and parish priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi and Moulana Mohammed Inayathulla Rizwi, chief priest, Anjuman Masjid, Udupi will be present on the occasion.

"Dr M N Rajendra Kumar, president, Karnataka state co-operative Marketing Federation, Bengaluru and president Dakshina Kannada district central co-operative society, Mangaluru will be the chief guest. Kota Srinivas Poojary, MLC, Dr K T Channa Sheshappa, chief director, National co-operative development corporation, regional office, Bengaluru and Kishan Hegde Kolkebail, president, district co-operative union, Udupi will grace the occasion.

"A Yakshagana, 'Radha Vilasa' is also organized on the evening of the occasion, in which artistws like Patla Satish Shetty, Satyanarayana Punchittaya, Guruprasad Bolinjadka, Nakkare Moole Ganesh Bhat, Karthik Innanje, Dr Varsha Shetty and Disha Shetty will entertain the audience.

"Badagubettu Credit Co-operative Society, Udupi, was founded by Katpady Beedu Jagannath Ballal during the pre-independence era in 1918, with the purpose of providing compost, seeds, ration, distribution of agricultural tools and materials etc.

"From 1960 to 1978 it was administered under the leadership of Justice V P Acharya, Omaika, T A Vasudevan, J C Rego and N H Clear. It was taken over by the co-operative department in 1978-79 and progressed further under the directions of Y Madhavayya, K S Gatti, R S Shetty and Valerian D'Souza, who rendered their service as administrators of the society.

"The government of Karnataka permitted the formation of a new board for the society in 1981-82. During this period Dr S Ramanand Bhat was the president, Sanjiv Kanchan, P K Satyanarayan, K Chandrashekhar Shettigar and T Shambu Shetty were the directors on the board.

"From 1980 the cooperative society received tremendous development under the sole and able leadership of Jayakar Shetty Indrali. The credit cooperative society is involved in many social works.

"The society had 360 members in 1980 with the partnership capital of Rs 6,000 and a deposit Rs 4,000. At present, the society has 28,000 members, Rs 4 crore as partnership capital and Rs 244 crore in deposits. It has registered a profit of more than Rs 4 crore in the year 2016-17.

"It has bagged 11 district level, four state level and two times central government level awards for its amazing developments under the leadership of Jayakar Shetty.

"The society has planned to carry out various pro-social activities like drinking water, helping special children and so on in the next annual year. A special budget has been maintained for these programmes since many years.

"It also owns two branch offices in Manipal and Kukkikatte, which will be inaugurated very soon."

The president of the society Sanjiv Kanchan, centenary celebration committee convener Purushottam P Shetty and vice president L Umanath were present on the occasion.
