Saudi Arabia says cinemas will be allowed from March 2018

Riyadh, Dec 11 (Agencies): Saudi Arabia said on Monday that public cinemas would be allowed in the conservative kingdom and the first cinemas were likely to open early next year.

"As the industry regulator, the General Commission for Audiovisual Media has started the process for licensing cinemas in the Kingdom," Minister of Culture and Information Awwad bin Saleh Alawwad said in a statement.

"We expect the first cinemas to open in March 2018."

The move is part of a series of reforms as part of the 2030 economic vision that also includes a war on corruption.

The changes are also intended to gain up to a quarter of the $20 billion currently spent overseas by Saudis, who are accustomed to travelling abroad to see shows and visit amusement parks.

Saudi Arabia in recent months has organised concerts, a Comic-Con pop culture festival and a mixed-gender national day celebration that saw people dancing on the streets to electronic music for the first time.

Good move by Saudi Govt. It should also give permission for all type of entertainments as this country is moving towards westernisatin and will follow modern islam. If everything will be avaible here, young saudis will not go to Bahrain / Dubai etc for entertainment. Permission should also be given to Russian girls to work in restaurents / malls etc.

VERY GOOD MOVE. ONE MOVE HAS TO BE OPENED FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM THAT IS THE MAJOR ONE AND THE HARD ONE FOR THE CURRENT YOUNGE ROYAL TO IMPLEMENT. MOST OF THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS ARE OLD AND STILL CLOSE MINDED OF OTHERS FAITH. 2018 WILL BE A GREAT YEAR FOR SAUDI'S WITH FREEDOM TO ENJOY LIFE WITHOUT RELIGIOUS POLICE WATCHING OVER

It is the experience of everyone, that, whether one's book is Quran, Bible or Geeta, all persons when the circumstances arise, have the same impulse, thus act in the same manner. Now Saudis have realized that.
