Udupi: Accident when overtaking bike - imprisonment for lorry driver

Udupi, Nov 25: A lorry driver who caused the death of the pillion rider of a motor bike when overtaking it was handed 20 months imprisonment by a court here. The additional JMFC court pronounced this verdict.

Manikya from Moodukonaje near Mangaluru was sentenced for causing the death of a woman in the accident. Judge of the court, Manjunath M S, who heard arguments and counter arguments in the case, found Mankya guilty of offences under sections 279, 337 and 104 of Indian Penal Code. He was also imposed with fine of Rs 2,500.

At about 4.15 pm on February 23, 2015, clerk of the court here, Nagendra and his wife, Jyoti, were going in their motor bike at a slow pace on the left side of the road near Sastan in the taluk from the direction of Brahmavar, when the lorry driven by Manikya, which approached the bike recklessly from behind, hit the motor bike when trying to overtake it. Jyoti, who was riding the pillion, fell to the road and her head got stuck in the wheel of the lorry. She died instantly.

Brahmavar police station circle inspector, Arun B Naik, had investigated the case and filed charge sheet. Public prosecutor, Mumtaz, had placed arguments in the court on behalf of the prosecution.
