2,000 tonnes of onion to be imported: Paswan


New Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS): Union Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Wednesday said public sector body MMTC will import 2,000 tonnes of onion in order to check rising prices in the local market.

He also said National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India was procuring 10,000 tonnes while Small Farmers Agriculture-business Consortium (SFAC) was asked to buy about 2,000 tonnes from farmers to boost supply of onions.

"We also have asked the Commerce Ministry to decide Minimum Export Price for onion (to discourage export)," Paswan told reporters here.

According to the ministry's data, onion prices have touched Rs 47 a kg.
