Mangaluru, Oct 26: With a team representing Human Rights Protection Foundation led by its president, Dr Raveendranath Shanbhogue and other volunteers solidly backing her cause, an eighty-year-old woman from the city who had faced injustice, is all set to get justice.
Rama Poojary, whom Girijakka had taken care of like a mother, had cheated her after borrowing two lac rupees from her. In this case, the JMFC court here has issued arrest warrant against Rama Poojary. It has also issued an order directing the superintendent of police to seize movable assets of Rama Poojary. Out of the proceeds from sale of movable assets, a sum of Rs 2,25,000 has been ordered to be disbursed to Girijakka.
Girijakka belongs to a lineage known as 'Balegaras' who traditionally visit villages and sell bangles to families. Out of profit made from this business, Girijakka had made fixed deposit of two lac rupees in a cooperative bank at Kadri here. A person named Rama Poojary contacted her and said he would look her after like his own mother and that he would be her support system during her last days. He also succeeded in taking the entire life's savings of the woman by promising to pay her interest periodically and the principal upon demand. But he failed to keep up his promise.
Girijakka filed suit in the civil court here in 2014. The court passed judgment in 2016, ordering Poojary to pay Rs 2,20,000 to Girijakka including interest. Girijakka, who was very sick then and waited for ten months to get back the money in vain, approached Human Rights Protection Foundation Udupi for help. The foundation complained to Senior Citizens Tribunal after which the sub-divisional officer here ordered Konaje police station to help the woman to recover her money. Still, nothing moved in her favour although Girijakka waited for six more months.
After advocate Prasad Bhandary filed contempt of court case last week on behalf of Girijakka, seeking to auction movable properties of Rama Poojary towards recovery of money due to Girijakka, the judge issued favourable orders. Konaje police have since arrested Rama Poojary and taken into possession a maxi cab owned by him. The vehicle was presented in the court.
Dr Raveendranath Shanbhogue said that the process of auctioning the movable asset of Poojary towards repaying money to Girijakka is in progress.
