Mangaluru, Oct 26: Residents of Kalavar and nearby areas were badly affected by fly ash from the sulphur unit of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) which polluted ground, water, trees and also the shops, houses and school premises on Wednesday, October 25. People also faced breathlessness due to the heavy concentration of coke powder in the environment.
Hakim, a local said, “We have lost peace since four years after the sulphur unit of MRPL stated in 2014. Environment in and around the unit is polluted and the residents are suffering from various ailments. Clean drinking water is also not available."
MRPL has started to develop 'Green Zone' on 27 acres around the unit owing to the pressure exerted by the villagers. Government has also given the go ahead for this project. Locals are urging MRPL to take steps to prevent sound, air and mud pollution also.
