Puttur, Oct 25: A scooty rider was killed after a container truck that came from behind hit him at Pattekre road bend between Addahole and Gundia. The accident happened on the evening of Tuesday October 24.
The ill-fated scooty rider has been identified as retired KSRTC bus conductor, Kavalanthara House Joseph alias Papachchan (59), who had become Gundia-based entrepreneur after retirement. He has left behind wife, two sons and two daughters.
Joseph had left his home at Gundia to offer prayers at Addahole church, it is said. Pattekre road bend is known as an accident-prone zone. A container truck that was speeding towards Mangaluru from the direction of Sakleshpur knocked Joseph down. When the truck overtook the scooty Joseph was riding and moved ahead, Joseph got crushed and his body got trapped in the rear wheel of the truck. The truck dragged him all along the road for a distance of about 1 50 metres.
The truck which dragged the body of scooty rider for 150 metres after crushing him, escaped from the spot without stopping. The body of Joseph was found to have been so badly mutilated that none of the body parts other than hands and legs which were found lying on the road, could be found intact. The lorry which was driven away, was stopped by roadside fruit vendors with the help of police personnel from Nelyady outpost on the basis of information passed on by the people who saw the accident happening. The truck driver was taken into custody.
After the accident which happened in late evening hours, this road, which witnesses dense traffic, witnessed chaos till night.
