Panaji, Jun 18: Out of 200 hundred high-tech post offices to be set up in the country, Goa is one of the states where two such post offices will be opened for serving the Aam Aadmi, said M P Shantaram Naik on Wednesday June 18.
Shantaram Naik, who visited the office of the post master general in Panaji on Wednesday, said that postal services in Goa are required to be modernized, made efficient and competitive with private sector. Hence, opening of post offices providing modern technology is the need of the hour. Naik said that Jyotiraditya Scindia, union minister of state for communication and information technology, is taking deep interest in modernizing post offices in the country
Naik had a long discussion with R P Gupta, director of postal services, holding the charge of postmaster general, Goa, about the electronic mail, electronic money order system, speed post etc.
Gupta said that the post offices in Panaji and Margao now accept letters and documents which can be delivered to the addresses through electronic mail. A customer can go to the post office , submit a letter or a document at the counter and the same can be sent to any other town, where the post office concerned will take a print-out and deliver to the addressee.
Similarly, monetary amount is also delivered to the addresses through code systems. Here the post office gives a code to the sender depositing the money in a post office. That code is conveyed by the sender the addressee who can obtain money in quick time from the local post office.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Naik said International Electronic Money Order System is likely to start in the country very soon and State is going to be one of the states where it will be in operation. This will help those Goans who are working abroad and who would like to remit money instantly through the post offices.
Naik urged Gupta to reduce the delivery period of ordinary post which has doubled in the last 20 years. Naik said that a letter posted in Delhi used to reach Goa in three days 20 years back and, today, it takes not less than six days.
Naik said speed post services are quite efficient as compared to private courier services. But there is still scope for further improvement.
