Mangaluru, Oct 22: The Ullal police on Sunday October 22 arrested a gang of five who were robbing people commuting on national highway 66, especially those coming from Kerala towards Mangaluru or those travelling from Mangaluru International Airport, and women.
The accused arrested are Ravikumar (24), Khaleel K alias Kallu (27), Rajesh K (30), Azeem alias Mohammed Azeem (23) and Jabeer Abbas alias Jabeer (24). While Ravikumar is a resident of Puttur, the other four are from Manjeshwar, Kasargod.
Based on credible information that the gang of criminals had made all preparations to loot commuters passing through the highway at night, especially women, Ullal police led by inspector Gopikrishna K R and sub-inspector Rajendra B, with the help of anti-rowdy squad of Mangaluru sub-division arrested the accused and seized weapons from them.
The weapons include machetes, rods, chilli powder and daggers. The police also confiscated a Maruti Swift car from the accused.
Among the arrested persons, Rajesh and Khaleel along with one Javed had on October 19 allegedly made a murderous attack on a person named Prajwal in Manjeshwar.
Ravikumar is an accused in four cases registered in Puttur, Manjeshwar and Barke police stations. The cases relate to ganja peddling, theft and assault.
Khaleel faces three cases registered in Kavoor police station. Rajesh too is wanted in three cases.
The police have also learnt that the accused were planning to smugge in ganja from Kerala too.
They were later produced in court and remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
The Ullal police have registered a case under Arms Act and sections 402 of the IPC.
