Sangli (Maharashtra), Oct 22: Ten labourers including three members each of two families who had gone to work at Karad, Sangli district, Maharashtra perished in a road accident after the lorry transporting them toppled.
The deceased have been identified as Bhemaraya Manoor (65), Ammavva Manoora (55), Appanna Manoor (38) belonging to the same family, Nisar Ankalagi (37), his wife Kamaroolabi Ankalagi (35), their daughter Chandbi Ankalagi (14), Mangaluru resident Sangavva Siddappa Koganoor (50), Suresh Rathod (50) from Indi taluk, Srimanthagowda Beeradara (50) from Jevargi, and Iramma Dandagooli (45) of Bidar.
Twenty people including twelve from Vijayapura were injured in the incident. The lorry laden with stones for construction was on its way from Kalaburagi district to Shahbad district in Maharashtra. Nearly thirty people from the state were travelling together to reduce cost of travel. As the lorry reached Manerajoori, Tasagaon taluk, Sangli district in the wee hours at about 3.30 am, it toppled due to negligence of the driver.
Ten people who got trapped under the stones died on the spot. The lorry driver fled from the spot.
A poor family from Chandakavate had gone for work to a place near Karad to pluck raw ginger. They had gone for the first time on assurance that they would be paid in accordance with the work they put in. Three members of a family of Bheemaraya were with them. Sangavva of Mangaluru taluk was employed in the kiln.
