Udupi: Online 'friend' from London defrauds local of Rs 1.37 lac

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Oct 21: A man from Ambalpady here has become victim of an online fraud and lost Rs 1,37,500.

Sanjeeva Balkur (56), the victim of the fraud, became friends with a girl named Lisa Cole through social media. She reportedly came from London to Delhi on September 13 this year.

The girl told Sanjeeva that on landing at the Delhi airport, she was questioned by the customs officials. She told the officials that she had brought a demand draft for one hundred thousand pounds to buy jewellery and a few items in India.

She then requested Sanjeeva Balkur to deposit Rs 42,500 to the bank account mentioned by her for clearance of the demand draft. Sanjeeva Balkur transferred the amount through internet banking and cheque.

The next day, on September 14, a person claiming to be a customs officer from Delhi airport called up Sanjeeva saying that Lisa Cole had been kept in a guest house and asked Sanjeeva to transfer Rs 75,000 for high court verification and conversion of the demand draft brought by Lisa from pounds to Indian rupees.

Sanjeeva Balkur transferred the amount through cheque. He again transferred another Rs 20,000 on September 15 to pay tax for the clearance of the cheque.

Thereafter, the neither the girl nor the 'customs officer' contacted Sanjeeva. Attempts to contact Lisa went in vain. It was then that Sanjeeva realized that the girl had cheated him.

The Udupi police have registered a case under IT Act and Sec 420 of the IPC.

Ha ha haaa............21st century India and still there are folks like this!!! Don't they read news papers? browse internet news? How can people be so ignorant.....and to add this this there was this ridiculous program in a kannada TV channel which every other week airs programs like "beer bottle idhe mars nalli" :) "....Pralaya hatra baruthide...." , ".........aa halli baaviyalli deyya ide......."

I couldn't believe people can be so naive, stupid and ignorant. Also heard a case of a lady in Belthangady pledging her entire house (who knows how much hard earned property) and paid money to a online fraudster !!! Entire lifetime earnings gone in an act of utter stupidity!!!

It is possible that Lisa Cole was not from London. What images/information we see on Facebook/whatsapp might not be the true identity of a person. It is possible that Sanjeeva never spoke to Lisa. It could be a man who pretended to be Lisa Cole.

If people from our educated districts become victims and do not use their intelligence/common sense, imagine what would people from other parts on India would do.

This is the second incident reported in last week.

People, please wake up. Never send any money upfront. Do not trust any emails. Do not disclose your personal details on websites/social media.

Do not become victims of " Phishing" scams. If you get an email from the bank asking you to enter the account information never divulge. Make sure to look for https:// and it is a secure site.

    People,

    This is typical Nigerian fraud.

Some of the Nigerian crooks are having UK mobile number (+44 XXX XXX XXXX)and fooling people online/phone online...there are girls working in Call Centers to entice the prospective clients!!!.

I have heard from at least a dozen victims personally about this type of fraud...including one of the top builder from Udupi...

Epicenter of all frauds is in Nigeria...phone numbers are mostly from UK....What they do is buy a Internet (VoIP) phone with UK number at UK and take it to Nigeria and connect to internet there....keep some girls to entice guys like this guy...

There is no dearth for morons in our society...its very easy to fool if they use girls...

People be careful and don't succumb these fraudsters please...

Please contact Jossey Sir for further instructions...

    Sanjeeva,

I can certainly help you to get that money back But in the meanwhile could you please deposit Rs. 50,000 as 'fees' for start looking at your case; and later on deposit another Rs. 25,000 as 'fees' for writing to you regarding the progress of your case.

You see, I actually know where Lisa bhabi is staying in Delhi. If you could pay me another 'fee' of Rs. 1 Lac, I could actually bring her to you in Udupi.
