Bengaluru: Vidhana Soudha fete - CM slashes costs, makes gala one-day affair

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Oct 17: The cost of the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Vidhana Soudha has been brought down from Rs 26.87 crore to Rs 10 crore. Also the celebrations will be held only on October 25 unlike the secretariat’s earlier plan of making the gala a two-day affair.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday directed presiding officers of both Houses of the legislature to make the event a low key affair. Plans to gift gold biscuits and silver plates to legislators and lawmakers have been dropped.

The chief minister's direction to Legislative Assembly Speaker K B Koliwad and Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy comes after the controversy created on the exorbitant costs.

Bangalore was hit with heavy rain some days ago. Lots of lives are lost due to many reasons. In this situation ,government must utilise funds for rebuild those deceased families and to repair those badly hit roads to prevent further hurt. Please give importance for lives, not to non living objects like building etc. No politics here, only preventive work is needed. .

By celebrating do the respect of vidhana soudha increases? What a rubbish statement. Priority should be not to waste tax payers money on these kind of activities. Instead spend the same money to the welfare of the people. There are people who cannot afford one meal per day. And this celebration at the time of suffering of people that is Bangaloreans at the time of loss of lives and property due to rains doesn't make any sense.

Mr. Shammi, I do agree with you that people celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. But they do it with their own money, that also when they have money in their pockets. Not when their pockets are empty or when they are living on borrowed money. Why do they require 10 crores to celebrate the anniversary of the building? Can't they do it in a few lakhs of rupees? How much of this money is going to go into the pockets of the politicians and the congress high command for fighting the forthcoming assembly elections?
How much of the sanctioned money for the "BHAGHYA" schemes actually reached the intended BPL beneficiaries? How much of it has been misappropriated?

Why wait only government if every city has 10NGO's that itself do their duty properly .To some extent poors will get better status - Great comment. If Government cannot work for the people then why they collect taxes? Whether it is BJP or Congress, I don't care. My point was why unnecessary burden on state exchequer that is burden on we people. Have you ever seen the suffering of Bangaloreans who are affected by rains? Do you know how many people died due to potholes? Why government or government departments didnot fill potholes? Why most of the roads are not worthy of travelling? We pay hell lot of taxes but do we get proper service? Money is getting wasted for celebrations and advertisements of government achievements. But whose money after all? Coming back to celebration of birthdays and other family functions....it's individual to decide. That money doesn't come from the government. It is hard earned money of individuals. Do you know how much an MLA/MP gets in perks? Whose money it is? These MLA's or MP's just lead luxurious life. If they really care for the vidhana soudha, why don't they contribute? Rs 10 crore charity by these politicians is nothing. Current PM toured all over the world. Whose money it was? Any positive outcome? Nothing so far. PM went to different countries just to get business to his chelaas like Adani, Ambani and many more.

10 Crores is also big amount. Do we need to incur these costs? Instead transfer the money to Relief Fund and can be used for relief. Nowadays lot of people are losing their lives due to heavy rains and bad roads. We can use this money for these purposes instead of spending for stupid celebrations.
