Beltangady, Oct 17: In the early hours on Monday October 16, thieves entered nine shops located in the town apart from Aladangady, Guruvayankere and Naravi, and took away cash and valuables worth several thousands of rupees. All the nine shops are located within the limits of the local as well as Venoor police stations
Three shops looted were from the town, while six others were from Aladangady downtown. In one shop at Guruvayanakere, shutters were lifted by the thieves before stealing cash and valuables. Cash amounting to Rs 15,270 and items including saris worth Rs 2,4,000 wee stolen in total.
The thieves had also tried to burgle Arafa Sanitary in Guruvayankere by breaking the shutter door. They could lay their hands only on small cash there. Similarly, only a bottle of liquor and small cash were stolen from a wine shop at Santhekatte in the town. Petty cash found inside Sriram Finane here was stolen after breaking the shutter door.
Complaints about the thefts were registered in the town police station. Although there is information that theft also had happened at Naravi, no official complaint was received. The police suspect that the thefts would have happened between 1 am and 4 am on Monday and that heavy rain in the region would have made the task easier for the thieves. Thee are claims that the gang of thieves had come in a car from the direction of Kaarkala. The police are verifying CCTV footage in a bid to nab the thieves fast.
Although sniffer dogs were pressed into service at Aladangady, the dogs proved to be not of much help. Bantwal assistant superintendent of police, Dr Arun, visited the spot. Policemen who have registered cases, have visited diffeent spots of theft and pooled information.
