Puttur: Timely action by brother saves life of girl bitten by snake

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Oct 13: A student saved the life of his sister by tying a cloth tightly above her wound and then sucking and spitting blood repeatedly. The sister of the boy was bitten by a snake. This incident was reported from Kokkada.

It is said that the boy in question, Nitin K R, son of Raju, a first PU student of St George PU College at Nelyady and resident of Kannahittilu House in Kokkada, had learnt this as first aid methd in case of snake bites in his school. After his 11-year-old sister, Sharanya, was bitten by a poisonous snake in the farm belonging to the family, Nitin recollected about the first aid method he was told in the school. He tightened a cloth above the wound inflicted by the snake and sucked blood with his mouth from the wound which he spit out.

Sharanya was then taken to a private hospital at Mangaluru. The doctors there, who conducted checks, confirmed that there is a little poison in her body and that she was saved because of timely first aid.

In the meanwhile, snake expert, Gururaj Sanil, said that sucking blood from the wound to take out poison is not very affective, as only about 20 percent poison can be taken out by this method. He said that tying a tourniquet some distance away from the wound or tightening a bandage over the wound would result in slowing down the speed with which poison spreads in body.

A big brother in everyway.Tried to save his sister.Tied a tournique was a great idea, but sucking blood was nt.Afterall he is small boy.did what others taught.Neve ever suck blood from snake bite.It will not only harm the helper more ,than the bittenone.suppose by sucking suddenly it goes to throat by choking ,you have two patients. Our elders were doing by biting pepper in mouth sucking and spitting.mucous membrane takes up the venom faster .so PLEASE DONT SUCK VENOM.instead go to a doctor or hospital fast .but before tie a cloth above the wound where one bone is.where two bones are difficult to bind blood flow.Hats off to the boy .

It is not advisable to suck out the poison from the injured person’s body as it would prove to be fatal to the person if he/ she has a cut in the mouth.
If you are able to reach any good hospital in next 30 minutes then please rush the victim and let the doctors take care of it.
No snake venom will kill you instantly, so never get panicked.

This boy just proved how much he loves his sister.
    Bravo!!!!

Brave action by the boy. I think tying a knot above the bitten place was more effective. It is most important to rush the bitten person to the nearby hospital where anti venom is available.

Though the boy attended to his sis without fearing for his life is a heroic job indeed, but sucking venom is a myth n hardly effective n can pose a risk to the one who sucks depending on type of venom, so also tying a tight tourniquet for a long time can damage the limb!

Best is to move the victim to the hospital with the limb kept below level of the heart!
BTW, many a times the bite could be dry w/o venom or very less venom!!

Although i appreciate the presence of mind of the boy, there is still no proper education of how to provide first aid to Snake bite in our area. The best way to provide first aid it to tie a bandage above the limb, keep the wound below the level of the heart and take the patient to the nearest hospital. Sucking the blood is wrong and is more dangerous and would have put the life of the boy in danger. If he had even a small/minor cut in his mouth even he would have been poisoned (I assume as nothing had happened to the boy that the snake was non-venomous). Please do not suck the blood from the snake bite wound is my request to all the readers.
