Karkala, Oct 13: Chief whip of the opposition in the state assembly, V Sunil Kumar, who represents the local assembly constituency in the Vidhan Sabha, said that proposed construction of tollgate at Belman on the state highway from the town to Padubidri is another example for anti-people stance of the Congress government in the state. He also said that this plan lays bare economic bankruptcy of the government.
He was addressing the participants of a protest meeting organized under the leadership of BJP and various outfits at Belman bus stand on Thursday October 12 against the plan to set up tollgate at Belman.
"The state government is aiming at robbing the purses of poor people. BJP government could build this road at a cost of Rs 65 crore. But when the tender process was set rolling for this highway, tollgate construction agreement had not been entered into and there are no documents on record about it. Now the state government has suddenly decided to make money from this state highway located in a rural belt of Udupi district," he criticized. Zilla apanchayat member, Reshma Uday Shetty, expressed total opposition to the tollgate construction and demanded that the proposal should be shelved by the state government.
BJP district industrial cell convener, Uday Kumar Shetty, district BJP vice president, Sadashiva Shetty Bola, taluk panchayat member, Asha Devendra Shetty, Pushpa Satish Poojary Bola, taluk panchayat vice president, Gopal Moolya, and several others participated in the protest.
