Bengaluru: Four deaths in a week - BBMP finds loophole in CM's pothole directive

Bengaluru, Oct 12 (DHNS) : With Chief Minister Siddaramaiah cracking the whip, the BBMP began fixing potholes on Wednesday.

But don’t expect smooth, safe roads in a fortnight: the BBMP is going by the letter of his instruction, and only filling up ditches that technically qualify as potholes.

Four people have died since last week in accidents attributed to potholes.

On Tuesday, Siddaramaiah gave the municipal authorities 15 days to fill up all potholes, but the BBMP has found a clever workaround.

BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad chaired a day-long meeting on Wednesday with mayor Sampath Raj, engineers and corporators.

“We will just fill up potholes as defined by the BBMP,” a BBMP engineer said at the meeting. His suggestion was accepted by the others present at the meeting.

That means many stretches will remain as they are, fraught with risk for those riding two-wheelers.

According to the BBMP, a pothole is a crater that appears on a smooth flowing, tarred road. The crater has to be created by wear and tear, increased vehicular movement or heavy rainfall.

“If a pot-shaped hole or crater shows up on a smooth road, it is termed a pothole,” the mayor said.

The BBMP will not repair dug-up roads. “Roads are dug up by organisations such as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (Bescom). It is their responsibility to tar them and they will have to do it now,” he said.

The problem of bad roads will be addressed later, when work begins on concretising roads, he told the meeting.

BBMP engineers also sought leniency in Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards.

“When it rains and time is short, we cannot follow IRC standards. We can’t dig up the roads to repair them. So, we will just fill up holes and tar the patches,” the engineer said.

Karnataka State Govt. has already spent??? Rupees 7,000 crores on road repairs in Bengaluru itself, during the past 4 years, but unfortunately, all this amount seems to have gone down the drains (there are just too many drains in Bengaluru - even the various civic agencies of Bengaluru have no count of them).

Hence, to the great misfortune of Bengalureans, the process has to start all over again. Calling for tenders, passing the tenders, issuing the work orders, releasing the payments. At the end of it all, no accountability is fixed for the (shoddy) works carried out (very often, 'works carried out' will be existing only on paper, as per the official records).

God save the lives of innocent Bengalureans, from "Pothole Deaths". God save Karnataka! May the souls of the innocent victims rest in peace.

i have more amount of toothpaste on my toothbrush than the amount of tar in those pot holes .again the potholes are filled up by contractors ....none of them have any scientific approach to filing and capping them ...some babu form across the fence has be assigned the job there is no engineer in sight..no evaluator in sight .....nothing

anyway what we can contribute is only votes....they will remember us at the beginning of the net elections...until them worry about GST

CM should walk and take a ride on all the roads in Karnataka and not travel in govt. allotted vehicles and with convoy of security personneal to understand the grave conditions of the roads in the state. Sitting in Vidhana Soudha & giving huge talks he will not understand the situations. What about local MLA's and MP's are for? Are they only are there to cut ribbon's and give provocative interreligious talks. Shame on these people. Where is the development under congress rule. Road situation in the state is worse than 50 years back.

Sachidanand, For Potholes on all over Karnataka, & specially capital city Bangalore, We need to blame all political parties, all the MLAs & all the MPs of the state. I have noticed worst potholes during previous BJP. Even if we elect JD(s) next year even they will not fix the Potholes. What is the job of all the MLS & MPs of Karnataka, even if the belongs to opposition, for the benefits & privileges they r claiming from the tax payer's money?
