Mangaluru, Oct 9: City mayor Kavitha Sanil with other Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) personnel raided a residential apartment complex at Maryhill on Monday, October 9, after she received several complaints from the neighboring residents on release of sewage into open.
At around 3:30 pm, the mayor raided 'Vailankanni Abode' of Vishal Enterprises Builders & Developers. Residents around the vicinity had earlier complained about sewage being released into open area at 3 am every day which emitted bad smell all around the place.
To the shock of the mayor, it was revealed that the builder had only acquired a license for construction. The builder had neither acquired the completion certificate nor the door numbers. He had continued using the water and electricity which he had used during the time of construction. Added to that, out of the 24 apartments, only ten of them were occupied by owners, while the others were occupied by families whom the builder had permitted to stay there on temporary basis till his other apartments were completed.
Taking swift action, the mayor, disconnected the water supply to the building. She also reprimanded MCC officials for not taking action even after receiving several complaints.
The mayor also said that the builder will be directed to pay a fine of four years for misuse of water and electricity supply and for breaking corporation rules. She also directed the officials to take action against the builder and to stop all construction work of his company.
Residents living in the building complained to the mayor that their repeated calls to the builder demanding door numbers have been ignored from a long time.
